Well, she doesn't have friends except for one person... so maybe that person with her developmental disability has a food allergy or something. Or she could just be doing it for the hell of it. Maybe she knows how bad the school lunches are and whatever.
Also, right now, Jade isn't eating or sleeping properly. She sleeps very little because of her mother well... you know what alcohol can do to you. Plus she skips meals. I want to start it out as the reader knowing something is wrong... yet realizes it's something that can be put aside for now until later in the story when it worsens. I know lack of sleep, stress, bullying and not eating/over eating can cause depression.
I think i have mild depression from moving a lot and changing schools all the time. I ate a lot and got stressed a lot... now I'm really chubby. I think most people who are obese, some do it because of undiagnosed depression.
I just want Jade to have a good role in this story. I want her to have at least one friend she relates to who is also bullied due to disability and acting differently. Her friend is going to be easily hurt and emotional. I have an online friend, who happens to be my best friend and she has mental retardation... borderline to mild I think. But I'm calling it a developmental disability because I think mental retardation is a bit offensive to some of them, despite being the medical term. It would be a good reason for both Jade and her friend to be called retards though because of their disabilities.
I thought of something about that too. Maybe Jade does something, say in math class where she gets a few of the answers wrong and the students laugh and start calling her retard. I had trouble with math when I was growing up and I also had trouble with getting my work done too. So maybe that could play a good part in her disability.
But I know what you mean. Depression is common in ASDs because of either bullying, stress at home or just from chronic distress. Like I said earlier, I contracted a bit of mild depression from ignorant teachers, a few bullies (mostly verbal harassment nothing too serious that I couldn't ignore), moving from one place to another and changing schools during the eighth grade.
They should have kept me back in eighth grade because all that moving really screwed me over. I could also use that experience for my character but maybe make it something that happened when she was younger. Plus, with her depression, her father just passed away in a car accident on impact so that adds to her depression... with her alcoholic mother, bullies at school, getting somewhat bad grades (C's and D's so that she's at least still trying to manage)... that can be a handful for someone, especially like her where she has an autistic disorder.
It's more high functioning though. My character is somewhat like me... she took speech therapy at a young age (I did at the age of four and if my parents and the school hadn't put me in as soon as I started saying/repeating words, I'd be unable to communicate). I want to do a little back story on her plus a current story on her to give the readers an idea what her life is and was like growing up.
Mibba.com (where I usually go) has a place where you can create your own characters and stuff. So I might use that to add a little back story and history to her... plus give the readers an idea of what they are looking at for this autistic girl.
Also another thing about her depression is that in the first chapter, she does get in a state of depression. But she figures it's just her autism since she did have a meltdown/outburst. Right now it's at the early stages so it more or less develops into something worse as the story progresses.
